Defend the Herd — Docs
Overview
SMARTBULL · Defend the Herd is a browser game wrapped around one idea: a black bull holding the line against an alien swarm that gets smarter the more people play it.
You defend through endless waves. Each wave is a short battle against the swarm in a different mini-game — deduction, memory, timing, or nerve. Survive a wave to hold on; the deeper you go, the faster and sharper the swarm becomes. Lose your focus to zero and the run ends.
Your score is the highest wave you reach. The five bulls who hold longest before the leaderboard closes split a 100,000 $SMARTBULL prize.
How to play
- Move / act — drag anywhere on mobile, or use arrow / WASD keys on desktop. Some waves are tap-based, some are drag-based; each wave tells you the rule.
- Focus bar — your health for the run. Mistakes drain it; surviving a wave restores a little. At zero, the run ends.
- Hold on — clear a wave's objective to push the swarm back and advance. Waves never end; difficulty keeps rising.
- Score — highest wave reached. Time is only used to break ties.
The waves
Waves 1–4 introduce each attack type; from wave 5 they're drawn at random from what's unlocked, and get harder every tier.
FEINT
Charge left or right to break the swarm's line. The swarm simultaneously guesses your side. Match it and you're blocked; differ and you break through. Hold through a set number of breaks to advance. The swarm predicts from your history — the trick is staying unpredictable, which is harder than it sounds. A live Swarm Read % shows how often it's catching you.
RECALL
The swarm signals a sequence; you repeat it in order to disrupt them. It grows longer and faster as you climb, and higher waves add decoy flashes to bait a wrong tap. Wrong taps cost focus; complete the full order to advance.
PULSE
A ring closes toward a target mark — charge when it lines up. Higher waves tighten the window and add false pulses (red): charge those, or miss a real one, and you lose focus. Land enough clean hits to advance.
EVADE
Outrun a hunter-drone for a timer. The drone predicts where you're heading and cuts you off, so straight-line running fails — you have to feint. High tiers add a second hunter. No shooting; pure evasion.
More attack types and combo waves (mechanics mixed together) unlock as the swarm evolves.
How the swarm learns
The swarm is a single hive-mind shared by everyone. It "gets smarter" in a concrete, honest way:
- Every run contributes data about how real people play — which side you favor in FEINT, the movement habits it can exploit in EVADE, and so on.
- The swarm reads that growing playbook back at you. The more games it has seen, the better it predicts your next move. Within a single run it already adapts to you; across the herd it adapts to everyone.
- Its IQ is a public number that rises as the community plays. It launches near zero — knowing nothing — and the herd raises the threat together.
The tournament
A pre-launch stand decides the prize. Defend in the days before launch; the leaderboard freezes the moment the token goes live, and the winners are locked.

- Ranking: highest wave reached. If bulls are tied on wave, the faster time wins.
- Close:
17:00 UTC · Jul 7— the moment of launch (17:00 UTC · Jul 7). - Winners: top 5 on the frozen board.
- Payout: prize is denominated in $SMARTBULL and sent to winners' submitted wallets after runs are verified.
Fair play
Because real value is on the line, runs are checked before they count toward the prize:
- Scores are validated server-side — the client can't simply declare a wave.
- Highest-wave and completion time are cross-checked for plausibility; impossible or manipulated runs are rejected.
- Each qualifying run is tied to the wallet submitted with it.
If a submitted run can't be verified, it won't be eligible for a prize slot, even if it appears on a local board while you play.

For the curious. The game is a single-file browser build; the tournament and shared swarm run on a small backend.
- Client: vanilla HTML/CSS/JS — no engine dependency. The swarm, waves, and audio are all generated in-browser.
- Backend: a lightweight API stores the leaderboard and (in a later phase) the swarm's shared, cross-player memory. It validates runs before accepting scores.
- Audio: the chiptune soundtrack and effects are synthesized live with the Web Audio API — there are no music files to load.
- Config: a single
config.jsholds the contract address and settings, so buy links and prize data update everywhere at once.
